I'm trying to find weird and quirky facts about the different generations of 911s, not just spec things and numbers, but other interesting things that the normal gearhead wouldn't know. Anyone have any good 911 fun facts, by generation?

72 had a external flap for the oil tank for better weight distrubution but sutpid gas station attendents kept putting gas in instead so porsche said fuck that.

Some 912's mainly the late soft window targa's are rarer and more expensive that 911T's of the same year.

Here is one un-truth about 911s.
A lot of people say that all 911s have the engine in the "wrong" place and that this causes the car to cause the "pendulum of death" that almost always kills you if you enter a spin.
It's actually not true.
It was pretty true for the classic 911. I nearly spun one without even going fast. I was going pretty damn slow but hit some bad road and lost traction. The car started spinning because it wanted to kill me. The narrow body cars with no traction control and skinny tires were a real handful to master.
But things changed with every generation. I'm not sure where the biggest improvement happened as I've only driven an 82 911SC and my own 997.2 C2 but the difference is night and day.
I stuffed up once in my 997 going WAY faster than I was in the SC and experienced lift off oversteer. The back end actually came around kind of slowly and it was easy to apply opposite lock and ease back onto the throttle to right the ship.
IMO the 911 no longer tries to kill you. Far from it I think it's not that hard to drive. I actually find modern mid-engine cars that have the engine in the 'right' place and many front engine cars harder to drive fast.

and bias-plys? lol. my uncle has 2 dunebuggies, one with swingaxles, & one with irs. the swingaxle buggy is dangerous because it turns, the irs buggy is dangerous because it doesn't. haha (it does turn with the turn-brakes...would definately want turnbrakes on an aircooled vw/porsche).

One fun fact -
Air cooled 911s had lots of leather
The lower model 996s were adorned with enough plastic to cover a few large couches
The 997 had less plastic than the 996 but still too much
But it is not commonly known (due to how rare this option was actually selected) that the 997 could be ordered with tons of leather. The 991 wasn't the first water cooled 911 that you could spec out to have extra leather, Porsche must just be doing a better job of marketing those options or people care more about it these days and order cars with those options.
If you look hard enough you can find 997s that came with the extended leather option. My neighbor has one. It is SO nice. Makes you feel like you're in a classic Porsche.

I don't actually dislike them, but I dislike the hundreds of people on eBay selling flat noses and poorly donr flat nose conversions acting like all of a sudden it's worth 50k more than before. Too many good cars got bad conversion s done.

The original 911 was to be called the 901, but Peugeot said that zero in the middle was their thing.
